(CNN Business) - Nintendo is looking to attract customers who like to play on the go, while moving, by renewing its successful Switch console as a smaller, cheaper, and only portable device.
Priced at $ 199.99, the Nintendo Switch Lite is $ 100 cheaper than the original. You cannot connect to a TV to play on a larger screen, and the side controls do not separate. It also lacks a support, so it cannot be placed vertically on any surface while playing.
Nintendo expects that the Switch Lite console will attract players who travel frequently and play on the go. It will arrive in stores on September 20.
Switch Lite is priced close to the original restored Switch consoles offered by GameStop and Best Buy, making it a slightly more affordable option for those who want a new Switch. Nintendo acknowledged that the price was one of the attractive features of Switch Lite.
"It's really about choosing, you know, and the budget can also enter into decision-making," said Krysta Yang, Nintendo's public relations manager. "But at the end of the day, the most important thing is how you want the system to adapt to your lifestyle."
You won't have much free space in your bag or suitcase if you have the Switch Lite. It is only an inch smaller than the original Switch and a little lighter. The screen is also almost an inch smaller, but both have the same resolution.
Nintendo anticipates that the Lite can last 3 to 7 hours on a single charge, compared to 2.5 to 6.5 hours in the original.
It comes in bright yellow or turquoise colors, but also in a standard gray. A special version with Pokémon theme will be released on November 8, a few days before the release of the expected "Pokémon Sword" and "Shield" games on Switch.
The original Nintendo Switch has four separate directional buttons on the left side, but the Switch Lite changes them to a control panel, which could be a nice change for some. The rest of the controls and ports remain the same as the original.
The Switch was a bestseller for Nintendo when it launched in 2017. It sold 10 million units in less than a year and the shortage of supplies made them difficult to find. Although hardware sales have generally declined this year, Nintendo ranked first in sales last month and is the only manufacturer of video game consoles to boost sales, according to NPD Group industry analyst Mat Piscatella.
“Nintendo is having a great year overall. No. 1 in hardware, it is the leading software editor, and the exclusive products of the Nintendo platform are in the top ten, ”said Piscatella. "They are doing very well."
