(CNN) - The number of regions affected by the Amazon fires has been reduced, a press release from the Brazilian Ministry of Defense said Tuesday.
“According to satellite images of the Amazon Protection System (SIPAM) of the Ministry of Defense, there was a reduction in the regions affected by fires in the Legal Amazon, from Saturday (24) to Monday (26),” according to the communiqué of press.
The Ministry also said that 2,500 soldiers, 15 aircraft, 210 vehicles and 10 ships have intervened in the fire fighting aid. The Ministry confirmed that the operation will continue until September 24.
"Simultaneously with the fight against fires, additional brigades are being formed and repressive, prevention and awareness actions are being developed," the press release reads.
The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, tweeted on Saturday that he ordered to mobilize more than 43,000 soldiers to fight fires in the Amazon rainforest. The statement of the Ministry of Defense indicates that so far 2,500 soldiers have participated.
