The city of Herne in western Germany is on alert. A Monokel cobra, a snake whose bite can be fatal, escaped its owner on Sunday, August 25th. The man also possesses about twenty poisonous snakes at his home, reports BFMTV , which relays an article from the daily Bild .
The alert was given by a resident, who saw this cobra in a corridor. Four houses in the vicinity where some thirty people live have been evacuated. Residents were advised to close their doors, windows and ventilation systems.
Flour and double-sided tape
This Tuesday morning, the cobra, which measures between 1.40 m and 1.60 m, was still sought after. In an attempt to get their hands on it, flour was deposited in several places. The snake could leave its mark. Double-sided tape was also placed on the floor to keep the animal stuck to it. For its part, the alleged owner claims that the snake does not belong to him. His other animals were seized, though he was allowed to own them, says the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung.
The cobra is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. A simple bite can lead to paralysis or even kill a man. Some species can even inject venom into a person's eyes.
