The origin of the protests in Hong Kong
In recent weeks, Hong Kong protests have been characterized by tear gas and furious fighting. But it was not always like this.
In March, when residents began protesting a controversial bill that would allow China to extradite city fugitives, weekend demonstrations were relatively small and peaceful.
However, since the beginning of June, protesters and police have faced each other on multiple occasions. In August, a strike throughout the city left completely paralyzed parts of the territory, and almost 1,000 flights were canceled when protesters occupied the airport for two days.
