Ponce, Puerto Rico (CNN) - All that remains intact of Lucy Beascochea's house are the stone stairs that lead to where she once was in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

The rest was swept away by Hurricane Maria in 2017, along with its furniture, electricity and pipes. And now that Tropical Storm Dorian arrives in Puerto Rico, he is worried about what will happen next.

The situation of Beascochea is not unique in its town. The mayor of Ponce, María “Mayita” Meléndez, estimates that María caused damages of up to 1,000 million dollars to the city. The houses are still covered in tarpaulins two years after the devastating storm.

Based on what was once his home, Beascochea built the small shelter where he lives today.

Beascochea said that FEMA gave him less than $ 9,000 to repair his house after Maria, but says that does not start to cover the cost of what he really needs: a complete reconstruction.

“The money they gave me is not enough to rebuild the house. They only gave me to repair, ”said Beascochea. "And that is not enough money."

CNN contacted FEMA about the Beascochea case.

Instead, she built a temporary apartment in what used to be her backyard. Walk to the shelter as carefully as if you were walking on a tight rope.

"The floor is falling," he told CNN as he advanced.

Gaps and spaces in the tiles cause leaks inside the shelter when it rains.

The small square space with ash block stairs works as your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. She can only put a mini refrigerator in the kitchen. There is no longer room for her daughter and grandson to stay with her, he said.

The roof is made of tin, and has visible holes. He said that when it rains, water comes out where the two pieces of tin come together. With Dorian's arrival, her brother has been helping her prepare by tying the roof and covering any hole.

Dorian is expected to produce winds with tropical storm force in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Although his home is no longer what it was, it is all he has left, and he said he fears he may lose that too.

Omar Jiménez and Bill Kirkos of CNN reported from Puerto Rico. Madeline Holcombe wrote from Atlanta.
