Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the idea of holding a summit of the Normandy countries on Ukraine is supported by all parties, but this meeting should lead to tangible results.
"There is a lot of talk about the resumption of the Normandy formula at the top level," Peskov told Russia's Channel One television. "It is an idea supported by everyone in Paris, Berlin, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelinsky and Russian President Vladimir Putin." This meeting should be fruitful before a decision is taken on its holding. ”
President Putin assured French President Emmanuel Macron during their meeting a few days ago that "any meeting in the Normandy formula should lead to tangible results and that what has been agreed previously to settle the conflict in Ukraine should be implemented."
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements on the settlement in Ukraine is a necessary prelude to start preparing for the meeting of the leaders of the four countries concerned with resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
"The first thing we need to do is to implement what the Normandy leaders have already agreed to start effectively separating troops and firearms, and secondly to implement the so-called Steinmeier principle," said Lavrov in a televised interview. On Monday, Macron announced at a closing press conference of the Group of Seven summit in the French city of Biarritz his intention to hold a Normandy summit meeting on Ukraine next month.
The last meeting of leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany was in Berlin in October 2016.
