Kirsten Gillibrand breaks off her campaign for US Democrats

The polls did not look good and the donations were not really bubbling up either. Now Kirsten Gillibrand is pulling the line - and herself out of the race for the Democratic candidacy.

The squad of Democratic presidential candidates is getting smaller: Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has announced the end of her campaign. It was important to see how best to serve the country, the New York State Senator said Wednesday (local time) in a video message. She now wants to help unite the Democrats to defeat President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Gillibrand had recently made up little ground in polls and could not keep up with the leading candidates even in the important indicator of donation income.

Today, I'm ending my campaign for president.

I am so proud of this team and all we've accomplished. But I think it's important to know how you can serve best.

To our supporters: Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Now, let's go beat Donald Trump and win back the Senate. pic.twitter.com/xM5NGfgFGT

Really small, the field is not even after their off by far. Still around 20 Democrats want to pull against the Republican Trump in the election. Currently, former US Vice President Joe Biden is the favorite in the race for the candidacy, followed by left-wing Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

In 2009, Gillibrand took over the Senate seat of Hillary Clinton for the state of New York when Clinton became Secretary of State. In the congressional elections last November, Gillibrand defended her seat. She is considered a sharp critic of the incumbent US president. In late 2017, she called for his resignation after several women accused him of sexual harassment. At the time, Trump called Gillibrand a "lightweight" that had "begged" him for campaign donations - and would do anything for it.

Who will get out of the race next?

So far, six Democrats have withdrawn their application. However, it is to be expected that the field of applicants will narrow down considerably in the near future. Experts expect that several candidates who can not qualify until the next major television debate of the Democrats in September in Texas, should give up soon.

The party-internal primaries, in which the Democrats set their candidates, only begin in February. Trump wants to secure a second term in the presidential election in November 2020.
