A week ago, the so-called "Orderly Return Law" came into force . It should help the authorities to deport asylum seekers who have to leave the country faster. It should also be a signal to the citizens that the state not only gives refuge to those who are in need, but also sends those back to their homeland who are not entitled to this refuge. Seen in this light, the law of Horst Seehofer (CSU) is a response to the 2015 refugee summer of Angela Merkel (CDU).

Today a flight from Germany is expected in Kabul again, it is the 27th of this kind since December 2016. Consistent deportations speak for a consistent constitutional state. The essence of the rule of law, however, is that each case is examined individually.

There are experts who doubt that Afghanistan is a safe country. And there is the story of those 69 Afghans who were deported on the 69th birthday of the Minister of the Interior, which Horst Seehofer found remarkable at the time.

In the end, one of the men was dead, he had suffered from mental health problems. He should not have been deported in this condition. Nobody has recognized that.

Equal educational opportunities should be normal in a democracy , but in Germany they are not. In the studies of the last few years one reads, in different variants, always the same: Children from rich families have better educational chances than children from a poor environment . Children with a migrant background are worse off than those without education. Our education system is designed like a clan attachment.

For example, the mathematics achievements of 15-year-old students from socially deprived families are on average four years less than the achievements of students from socially better off families. Children from families with a high occupational status receive a recommendation for Gymnasium twice as often as children from working-class families. The examples from investigations of the past years are called the new ifo education barometer , which is presented today in Berlin at ten o'clock . It is the document of a silent scandal.

"We want to improve the educational opportunities in Germany in the joint alliance between the federal and state governments, and we want to set up a National Education Council on the model of the Science Council," says the coalition agreement of the governing parties. To date, however, there is no National Education Council. Why not, nobody can really explain.

The Ifo Institute surveyed around 4,000 people. 71 percent are in favor of spending more public funds on children from poorer families in order to increase their educational opportunities. 83 percent support expanding scholarship programs for low-income students. The vast majority of Germans want more money for educational justice. An order to politics can hardly be clearer.

The question of the right way to deal with it

The Amazon is on fire and the world community is considering what to do about it. What sounds like a matter of course is actually a highly sensitive field dotted with diplomatic treadmills.

The G7 nations agreed to provide $ 20 million in emergency aid to Brazil at its Biarritz summit. But Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro wants to accept them only under certain conditions. It is a game of vanities for which there is no time. Around 80,000 fires have already broken out in the Amazon this year. But how do you bring a stubborn president to reason?

By pressure, some say, calling for the suspension of the ratification of the Mercosur Free Trade Agreement between the EU, Brazil and three other South American countries. In no case, the others say, you should not annoy Bolsonaro with sanctions. He had to shake hands with him.

Perhaps the EU Commission's Director-General for Trade Policy knows the right way when she talks about Mercosur today at eleven o'clock in the offices of the EU Commission in Berlin. Half an hour later, the forestry associations meet with Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner (CDU). As you know, the local forest also has its problems.

  • The forest is burning, the politicians are bickering: what will happen to the free trade agreement Mercosur?

The story of the day: "If he smiled, it would be dangerous"

On Sunday evening died Ferdinand Piëch , the patriarch of the VW Group. The great SPIEGEL reporter Jürgen Leinemann , who died six years ago, quoted Piëch in 1993 with sentences like this: "'I was raised as a domestic pig and must live as a wild boar," he brings his life philosophy to an extreme denominator.

... is the SPD . Several days have passed without new candidates for the presidency. No one has recently reported that explicitly does not want to run. This peace is doing the SPD very well. On 1 September, the deadline for candidature ends. I am afraid that it will be over soon.
