(CNN Spanish) - The Ministry of Economy of Argentina announced on Wednesday that it proposed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to “roll over” the maturities of its debt. This, in response to the uncertainty of the financial markets since the Argentine government wants to guarantee exchange stability, especially in the electoral period.
"We want to agree with all political forces a protective campaign" that not only provides certainty to the financial sector, "but also the entire population," said Hernán Lacunza, Minister of Economy of Argentina, at a press conference, quoted by the official agency Télam. The official, the agency said, was accompanied by his cabinet, and some lawmakers from Cambiemos.
Lacunza indicated that four initiatives "aimed at easing the financial burden in the short and medium term" would be promoted. He also indicated that in these days a mission of (IMF) was in Argentina.
"We have proposed to this international organization," he said, "and this was one of the suggestions we received from the opposition, which we thought was prudent, reasonable, and timely, to initiate the dialogue, which must inexorably conclude in the following mandate, to re-influence debt maturities with that international organization.
The IMF confirms
Through a statement, Gerry Rice, the IMF's main spokesperson, confirmed that the international organization will analyze the proposal made by Argentina.
“The staff of the Fund is in the process of analyzing them and evaluating their impact. The staff understands that the authorities have taken these important steps to address liquidity needs and to safeguard reserves, ”Gerry said.
