(CNN Spanish) - The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, signed a decree that prohibits the burning of land throughout the country for 60 days from Thursday, the official Brazilian news agency, Agencia Brasil reported.

The decree signed by Bolsonaro, which determines the suspension of the permit to use fire, was published in the Official Gazette on Thursday, according to Agencia Brasil.

According to the information, the measure does not apply in cases such as phytosanitary control, provided it is authorized by the competent environmental agency; in fire prevention and fire fighting practices, and in subsistence farming practices of traditional and indigenous populations.

Operation Green Brazil, which brought together various bodies to fight fires in the Legal Amazon, registered a decrease in outbreaks in recent days. Although there is no confirmation of a rapid trend of fire extinction, the Brazilian government's perception so far is positive, according to Agencia Brasil.

“The evaluation is positive. With the parameters of Censipam (Operational and Management Center of the Amazon Protection System), we have seen that fire outbreaks have decreased considerably, ”said Vice Admiral Ralph Dias da Silveira, deputy chief of operations of the General Staff of the Armed Forces , in a press conference held on Wednesday.
