(CNN) - Tourists heading to Florida for the Labor Day holiday and the unofficial summer closing will face a stressful weekend.

MIRA: Real tide, the climatic phenomenon that could make Dorian's impact worse

Hurricane Dorian is expected to become a powerful category 4 storm for Sunday and is likely to reach the coasts of Florida or Georgia on Monday after passing through northern Bahamas over the weekend.

Leaving the path of the storm will be complicated, because its path is still unpredictable with four days to meander over very warm waters.

Flight Status

American Airlines has issued a complete list of Florida destinations that may be affected by the storm. Traveling to or from those airports may imply being eligible for an exchange rate exemption for tickets purchased before August 29 with travel dates from September 2 to 3. Full details of the qualifying itineraries are listed on the airline's website.

The notice follows several previous exemptions issued by American Airlines for destinations in the Caribbean.

Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, United and Frontier have also offered exemptions on exchange rates for itineraries that involve specific destinations in the Caribbean.

Airlines have posted those details on their websites and are adding Florida destinations as the storm's path evolves.

Cruise ships

The private island of the Bahamas of the Royal Caribbean cruise line, Perfect Day at CocoCay, will remain closed until September 4 so that local employees can secure and evacuate their families and homes, the company said on its website. Six itineraries had been adjusted this Thursday morning to accommodate the closure of the island.

Guests who have previously purchased the Royal Caribbean shore excursions for CocoCay will receive refunds credited to their on-board accounts.

On its website, Carnival Cruise Line listed a series of departures that are being monitored from Port Canaveral, Jacksonville, Port of Miami and Tampa in Florida, as well as an exit from Charleston, South Carolina. At noon this Thursday, those trips were expected to operate as scheduled, with the exception of a revocation of the port order for a Carnival Sensation that would leave the Port of Miami on August 31.

"As the safety of our guests and crew is our number one priority, we will continue to monitor the storm and provide timely updates as more information becomes available," said the notice.

Disney Cruise Line posted a notice about several departures on its website.

“At this time, based on the weather and storm trajectory currently forecast, we do not anticipate any changes in the navigation of Disney Fantasy on Saturday, August 31. We are closely monitoring the possible implications for Disney Dream departures this Friday, August 30, and Monday, September 2, ”said the notice published this Wednesday afternoon.

Amusement parks and other attractions

In Orlando, about 80.4 km inland off the Atlantic coast of Florida, Walt Disney World Resort opened its long-awaited Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land at Hollywood Studios on Thursday.

While Dorian's impact on the inner city full of theme parks is not likely to be serious, Galaxy's Edge faces a potentially soaked opening weekend and many disappointed fans who may choose to reschedule their visits.

Universal Orlando Resort is monitoring the situation. “At this time, the operations and schedule of our park continue normally. We have plans and procedures for serious weather conditions that have been proven over time and will continue to make operational decisions as we learn more, ”the company said in a statement.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central Florida, is monitoring the storm's path and can move its Mobile Launch Pad inside. The installation tweeted that it would provide more details about the installation's operations as the information becomes available.

Change of plans

Some travelers are proactively canceling their plans to Florida.

Lindsey Wolf and her husband had planned to take their children, ages 8 and 10, in kayak and tubes on the Rainbow River with friends who had recently moved to the Ocala area, but the Atlanta family has made other plans.

"It was easy to make the decision to cancel the trip considering the extent of the area where meteorologists expect the storm to arrive," said Wolf.

He knew that the rain would ruin his time in the sun and that the roads would be full of evacuees heading north.

Fortunately for his family, he found a hotel with a room available in Orange Beach, Alabama, "so we'll still have sun and water," he said. "Besides, we'll get out of there before the rain gets there."

"The children will understand one day, but last night our son did not eat dinner and both children cried."
