(CNN Spanish) - The former president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), the Paraguayan Nicolás Leoz, died on Wednesday night at 90, according to his lawyer, Ricardo Preda.
According to Preda, preliminary medical reports indicate that Leoz had suffered a heart attack after several health complications, which had him in bed for quite some time.
The former soccer manager was admitted to the Migone Sanatorium in Asunción, capital of Paraguay, after suffering a fall that affected his hip several months ago. Leoz was the largest authority in South American football for long years, a trajectory that was overshadowed by accusations of corruption within the scandal called Fifa Gate, which reached several authorities of the governing body of world football. Leoz had an order pending extradition by the United States justice for alleged money laundering.
Nicolás Leoz began his career as a football leader in the Libertad Club of Paraguay, where he was president and whose stadium in Asunción bears his name. He then presided over the then Paraguayan Football League, currently APF, and from 1986 to 2014 he served as president of Conmebol.
