OAS approves resolution to form commission to visit Nicaragua

(CNN Spanish) - The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, OAS, approved on Wednesday a resolution to designate a commission that could visit Nicaragua to carry out high-level efforts and seek solutions to the socio-political crisis that has lived in the country since April of 2018. The initiative was ratified with 21 votes in favor, 3 against, 8 abstentions and 2 absences.

The coordinator of the opposition Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy, said Tuesday, prior to the OAS session, that he hopes the government will allow the commission to enter, since not doing so, considering diplomatic efforts exhausted , Article 21 of the Democratic Charter could be applied, through which the suspension of the Nicaraguan state of the OAS could be put to a vote.

Although not all the names of the members of the commission are still defined, the United States proposed Ambassador Carlos Trujillo, Argentina delegated Leopoldo Sohares, undersecretary for American affairs to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Paraguay appointed Ambassador Elisa Ruiz Diaz Canada and Jamaica will confirm the names of their delegates in the coming days.

During the Permanent Council session, Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the OAS, referred to the case of the Nicaraguan citizen killed at the border of Costa Rica on Monday.

“It is important that the investigation and clarification of the murder by the Justice be absolutely carried out,” said Almagro, who also warned: “We urge that such a situation not be repeated again, it is completely contrary to the fundamental principles and values to preserve peace in the region and stability and security in our countries. ”

Costa Rica denounced this August 27 an alleged incursion of armed persons that would have caused the death of the Nicaraguan citizen. The Nicaraguan Army told CNN in Managua that the fact is under investigation. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, through a statement, reported an incident recorded on August 26 in which they died who they call a common criminal, without explaining the circumstances.
