French Defense Minister Florence Barley announced today that the European Union has reservations about the US naval operation to keep up with ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
"We do not want to be part of a plan to monitor ships, but we want to ensure a deterrent presence in the Gulf," she told AFP ahead of an informal meeting with her European counterparts in Helsinki.
"The idea of a European observer mission is also stalled because the number of EU countries willing to engage is counted on the fingers of one hand," she said.
The United States has announced its intention to form a coalition in the Gulf, claiming to protect maritime navigation, which many countries refused to participate in.
