Rabat-Sana

Seven people were killed in floods triggered by heavy rains on the outskirts of the southern Moroccan city of Taroudant.

Heavy rains in the region on Wednesday evening led to floods in the village of Tizert on the outskirts of Taroudant, which claimed the lives of the seven victims, Agence France-Presse quoted Moroccan authorities as saying.

The sources said that the floods washed away a football field in the village, where a match was held within the framework of a local amateur league.

"Young men barricaded themselves in a small building that took a warehouse but was swept away by floods," she said.

The Moroccan Meteorological Directorate warned in a warning bulletin yesterday evening of strong thunderstorms today in a number of areas in the south of the Kingdom, including the city of Taroudant and its environs, noting that these rains are likely to be accompanied by cold and gusty winds.
