Brigitte Macron thanked Brazil for its support after the country's head of state, Jair Bolsonaro, had made a disrespectful remark about her in France.
"Muito obrigada!" ("Thank you"), said the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron in Portuguese during a visit to the northern French Azincourt, the news agency AFP reported. She was very touched by the support she received from many Brazilians. Public statements by Brigitte Macron, especially on contentious issues, are rare.
Head of state Macron had complained openly at the beginning of the week during the G7 summit in Biarritz about Bolsonaro and described his behavior as "extremely disrespectful". The Brazilian president had on the social network Facebook with an entry created the impression that he support a nasty remark about Brigitte Macron.
The French president had banned the mockery of his wife's appearance and said he hoped Brazil would "very quickly" get a head of state "who behaved appropriately". Bolsonaro then demanded an apology.
Brazilian government spokesman Otavio Rêgo Barros said Wednesday that the controversial Facebook commentary had been dropped to avoid "misinterpretations".
