The theme of the day: Johnson's Brexit trick

Boris Johnson puts everything on one card when it comes to enforcing a tough Brexit. In order to be able to pursue his plans for an unregulated exit from the EU, the Prime Minister wants to impose a compulsory break on the lower house. This lowers the chances of his opponents to pass a law against a no-deal Brexit.

One day after Johnson's surprising coup, the indignation is still great. Ruth Davidson, head of the Scottish Tories, announced her resignation. She had campaigned for the British to stay in the EU.

The reactions in the British and international media on Johnson's move were violent. "An unscrupulous prime minister," wrote the Financial Times, for example.

His father can only confirm that: he once advised that he should take his son "very, very seriously".

What role does the queen play in the dispute over Brexit? Elizabeth II blessed Johnson's break from parliament. On political issues, the British monarchs do not actually interfere, at least publicly. Maybe the queen will have to act again in the next few months. Should a vote of no confidence against Johnson succeed, she would have to appoint a new prime minister.
