LONDON (Reuters) - Britain has handed over a group of 156 cuneiform tablets that were looted most likely during the US-British invasion of Iraq, the British Museum said on Thursday.
"The British customs confiscated these plates, which date back to the period between 2100 and 1800 BC from a shipping company at Heathrow airport in 2011," the museum said in a statement. "The plates were handed over to the Iraqi ambassador to London, Saleh al-Tamimi. Later to the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad.
For his part, Al-Tamimi said in a statement that the protection of Iraqi heritage is the responsibility of the international community, expressing hope that this path will continue for future generations.
