Consequence from Lübcke murder: Justice Minister wants to tighten gun rights

"The state must defend itself": Justice Minister Lambrecht announces in SPIEGEL a new version of the weapons law. In the future, for example, the protection of the constitution should be integrated before granting a license.

As a consequence of the murder of the Kassel regional president Walter Lübcke, Federal Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht has announced an intensification of the weapons law. In an interview with Der Spiegel, Lambrecht says that membership in an extremist group or party should be enough to deny a weapons permit.

In addition, the weapons authorities should in the future have to submit a rule inquiry to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution before granting such a permit. Many local politicians wondered if they should even engage, said Lambrecht: "That can not be. The state has to defend itself."

The SPD politician wants to force the operators of social networks to act more consistently against hate messages in the network. The providers would have to be obliged to publish user data to prosecutors within a very short time, she says. "If the providers do not cooperate with the judiciary, this will have severe consequences in the future, then threaten high fines," says Lambrecht.
