UN Security Council extends UNIFIL mission in Lebanon for one year

The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for a year.

According to Agence France-Presse that the Council adopted unanimously during yesterday's meeting a draft resolution extending for a year the mission of "UNIFIL" without reducing the number of its members.

Diplomatic sources said yesterday that the Security Council will formally review for the first time since the establishment of the force, "UNIFIL" size and allow to consider reductions in the renewal of its mission, but the Council did not do this despite US pressure in this direction.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is a multinational UN force deployed in southern Lebanon.
