(CNN) - Google paid tribute to the Punjabi writer and poet Amrita Pritam this Saturday with a doodle, in celebration of what would have been her 100th birthday.

Born in Gujranwala, British India (now Pakistan), Pritam was one of the most prominent punjabi writers in history. He died in 2005 at the age of 86.

In Google's doodle, Pritam is represented writing while sitting in an open garden with black roses placed in front of her. The illustration refers to Pritam's famous autobiography, "Kala Gulab" ("Black Rose"), in which he disclosed details of his personal life, inspiring other women to talk about their own experiences with love and marriage.

The renowned novelist, poet and essayist is clearly remembered for her poem, "Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu," who cried over the heartbreaking division of India and Pakistan in 1947, Google said.

Pritam published his first collection of verses when he was 16, and then published more than 100 books throughout his career, spanning more than six decades. While it is often known as the leading punjabi poet of the twentieth century, many of Pritam's works were also written in Hindi and Urdu.

Pritam was nominated for Rajya Sabha, the Indian parliament, in 1986, according to Google. He also received many distinguished awards, including the Bharatiya Jnanpith literary prize and one of the most important civilian awards in India, the Padma Vibushan.
