The Permanent Mission of Russia to the United Nations announced that Russia will assume the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of September.

"The Russian presidency of the council coincides with the opening of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly and the convening of a high-level week of the United Nations," Fedor Stergijovsky, spokesman for the mission, told TASS.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will head Russia's delegation to the General Assembly session. The Russian program for the presidency of the Security Council will be presented monthly at a press conference held by Russia's Permanent Representative to the Council Vasily Nebenzia on September 3 after receiving official support from member states. .

The UN Security Council has 15 member states, including five permanent members - Russia, the United States, China, Britain and France.

The President of the Security Council is charged with drafting the program of the Organization, which, under Article 24 of the Charter of the United Nations, is responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security.

Other UN members have to abide by these decisions and the president also makes decisions on requests for emergency meetings.
