Hundreds of Turkish lawyers demonstrated in front of the Ankara Bar Association today to denounce the plans of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to tighten his control over the judiciary and establish an authoritarian regime that would eliminate the most basic standards of human rights and democracy.
The Turkish lawyers participating in the demonstration renewed their condemnation and rejection of the ceremony organized by the Supreme Court of Cassation in the conference hall of the Presidential Palace on the occasion of the start of the judicial year.
The majority of Turkish bar unions announced yesterday to boycott the opening ceremony of the judicial year, which will be held later in the presidential palace in the presence of the head of the Turkish regime in protest against the subordination of the judiciary to the Erdogan regime.
An official statement issued by the Bar Association, signed by the presidents of 52 out of 78 syndicates located across Turkey, called on the democratic forces and parties in Turkey to jointly fight to protect the independence of the judiciary, which is the basis of the democratic system in which Erdogan seeks to take the knockout after he took control of all facilities and organs. The state, especially the army, intelligence and the Supreme Judicial Council.
For his part, the President of the Istanbul Bar Mehmet Burakoglu told a press conference that the vast majority of Turkish lawyers know that Erdogan and his current approach has become a strategic threat to the future of Turkey, warning of Erdogan's efforts to control the judiciary and bar associations and to get rid of any free thought opposed to his rule The dictator pointed to Erdogan's 17-year-old strategic mistakes in domestic and foreign policies.
For his part, the President of the Turkish Republican People's Party (KPI), Kemal Kılıçdaroglu, confirmed Erdogan's violation of the principles of justice, judiciary and court decisions, including calling for the demolition of the palace where he resides because it is essentially unauthorized.
