Lavrov and Zarif: The need to continue efforts to eliminate terrorism in Syria and the return of the displaced

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed the need to continue efforts to eradicate terrorism in Syria and resolve the crisis in it through the Astana formula and provide the appropriate conditions for the return of Syrian refugees to their country.

"We discussed regional and international issues and the fight against terrorism in Syria and the region," Lavrov said at a news conference with Zarif in Moscow, stressing that Russia would only support resolutions that respect Syria and its territorial integrity.

Regarding the Iranian nuclear agreement, Lavrov stressed his country's full commitment to the agreement and the comprehensive joint work plan, pointing out that the current situation surrounding the agreement is a direct result of Washington's destructive policy, with the support of some of its allies clearly tried to provoke Iran.

Lavrov said that Washington, which announced its withdrawal from the nuclear deal, demands Tehran strictly implement its commitments, but this agreement represents a delicate balance of interests and commitments and can not be fragmented, where the implementation of part of it is binding and the other part is not, pointing out that this is totally unacceptable.

Regarding the situation in the Gulf region, Lavrov said that Moscow and Tehran are interested in the need to solve the problems of the region through dialogue to achieve stability in it and will encourage agreements based on the interests of all parties.

Zarif, in turn, stressed that the presence of the US occupation on Syrian territory is "subversive and illegal" and any action that could harm the Syrian people is unacceptable.

Zarif referred to the cooperation of Russia and China with Iran in the framework of the nuclear agreement and to help maintain it, calling on European countries to implement their obligations under the agreement ratified by the UN Security Council.

Zarif reiterated Tehran's welcome to the Russian initiative for collective security in the Gulf region, expressing his country's readiness to support all positive initiatives on regional security.
