Beijing-Sana
"Hong Kong's status is not the subject of discussion and China will not stand idly by if the situation there threatens national security," said Xu Luying, spokeswoman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office in China.
Xu was quoted as saying that the Chinese government fully supports Hong Kong President and Chief Executive Kari Lam in using all legal means to end the violence.
"The central government offices in Hong Kong represent the state and their status and security should not be compromised," Xu said.
Carry Lam said she had never asked the Chinese government to resign and had never thought about it. "Beijing believes that its government can resolve the three-month crisis without intervention from China," she said.
"I have repeatedly told myself over the past three months that my team and I should stay to help Hong Kong, so I said I didn't give myself the decision to take the easy path of leaving."
The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed last August that the rule of Hong Kong by the Chinese government is based mainly on the Constitution of China and the Basic Law of Hong Kong, stressing that "Hong Kong affairs are purely Chinese internal affairs."
