The topic of the day: The strength of AfD - and the consequences

Yes, CDU and SPD have each won in one state on Sunday, the Christian Democrats in Saxony, the Social Democrats in Brandenburg. In the other, they have clearly lost. The clear winner is the AFD, even if she came in second place in both countries.

This affects the other parties, for example, the Left: The profits of the AfD are also associated with losses of the former Eastern Party. Still faction leader Sahra Wagenknecht makes the own party already responsible for the strengthening of the right-wing populists.

Neither CDU nor SPD want to coalition with the AfD. And so the new balance of power also has a big impact on the upcoming formation of a government: the old alliances no longer have a majority.

In Brandenburg is now a Red-Red-Green coalition for debate, or a Kenya coalition of CDU, Greens and SPD. This gives the Greens great opportunities to co-sign in the future. In Brandenburg, they have even won their first direct mandates. My colleague Milena Hassenkamp introduces one of the winners.

In Potsdam Marie Schäffer won her constituency - against Klara Geywitz, candidate for the SPD presidency

And in Saxony? Since only the Kenya option as a coalition is realistic. But talks between the CDU and the Greens are likely to be extremely complicated, as our reporter Timo Lehmann explains. The neighboring state of Saxony-Anhalt is already ruled by the CDU, the SPD and the Greens, but there has always been a row between the parties. In a proposal paper, CDU politicians now appeal again to their party to not rule out cooperation with the AfD. But if this position actually prevails, threaten the Greens already with consequences.

The number of the day: 1,1994

For the first time since January 2017, the British pound has fallen below the $ 1.2 mark. The low point is $ 1.1994. And once again, bad news for the UK economy goes back to Brexit chaos. Boris Johnson announced last week that he would put Parliament on a forced break until shortly before the Brexit deadline in late October - even dragging the Queen into the mud fight. Some MPs are now working on an uprising against the Prime Minister: they want to pass a law to prevent a no-deal. Johnson in turn is said to have threatened with new elections. You can follow all current developments in the news blog.
