(CNN) - Hurricane Dorian, now category 3, is agitated in the Atlantic Ocean about 105 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina.

Dorian's storm surge in Charleston, South Carolina, could be more than 10 feet (3 meters), which is only 2 feet (60 centimeters) less than the record set two decades ago by Hurricane Hugo.

Meanwhile, the Bahamas is trying to recover after Dorian's devastating passage, which left at least 20 dead.

This is what we know of the advance of Hurricane Dorian, minute by minute:

Tropical storm force winds hit the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina

Winds sustained by tropical storm force hit the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina, according to the United States National Hurricane Center.

Dorian, now a Category 3 hurricane, advances along the coast at 7 miles per hour (11 kilometers per hour), with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 km / h).

Even if the eye of the hurricane does not touch land and remains over the Atlantic Ocean, coastal cities must prepare for severe weather.

Dorian is currently about 105 miles (168 kilometers) south of Charleston, South Carolina.

What the hurricane could mean for South Carolina

Dorian moves slowly along the coast, passing Florida, and is about 105 miles (168 kilometers) south of Charleston, South Carolina.

Charleston is a low area, which means that storm surge could flood inland and cause a lot of damage. 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) of rain are forecast, and a storm surge could reach 7 feet (just over 2 meters) high, CNN meteorologist Jennifer Gray said.

The Charleston rivers could also recede and flood due to the swell, Gray said.

In the marina on the Charleston Ashley River, boats collide with each other while wind and rain lash the coast. High tide could cause river water to pour as the weather worsens.

2:15 AM ET

Downtown Charleston is flooded

Floods are reported in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, as a result of high tide and Hurricane Dorian, according to the Charleston County Emergency Management Office.

The Charleston Police Department has closed more than a dozen streets due to flooding. Through Twitter, police reminded residents to check the list of closed streets online.

Catastrophic damage is just beginning to appear in the Bahamas

The only international airport on the island of Grand Bahama has been destroyed. "After two days of trying, we can finally get into the Freeport airport," Patrick Oppmann of CNN said from the scene on Wednesday.

“It's gone… The level of devastation is really impressive. There are no walls left at the airport. The roof has collapsed, ”said Oppmann.

The destruction of the airport is a blow to residents who desperately need medical evacuations or emergency help. Between Grand Bahama and the Abaco, about 60,000 people may need food aid, the World Food Program said.

Volunteers now rush to rescue trapped residents and deliver help. In parts of the Abaco, going door to door is not an option because there are no doors. Instead, volunteers are walking through floods and riding jet skis to get around flooded areas.

Injured residents cannot reach a hospital because it is blocked by submerged cars.
