(CNN) - It has more than 4,828 kilometers of coastline and no less than 48 UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Now, Spain has been declared the best country in the world to visit.

For the third consecutive year, it slipped just above France in the 2019 Competitive Travel and Tourism Report of the World Economic Forum, the Switzerland-based organization that annually brings together the world elite to discuss important issues.

And with great travel attractions like Barcelona and its basilica La Sagrada Familia, Madrid and its famous Prado and Costa del Sol Museum with warm and cozy beaches, it's easy to see why Spain is the world's favorite.

Germany's third place, above Italy, Japan and the United States, may surprise some. But the destinations are classified according to the "preparation for travel" in what the FEM calls a "turning point" for the travel industry. Strong criteria, out of a total of 90, included infrastructure, security and sustainable travel initiatives. Culture, accommodation and value for money were also taken into account.

Japan and the United States completed the top five. Yemen was at the bottom, at number 140.

Little change at the top

The top 10 countries have remained largely unchanged from last year's rankings, other than the United Kingdom, which went from fifth to sixth.

Italy entered the number eight and Canada in the nine.

To create the biennial table, the FEM examined four areas of tourism: natural and cultural resources, infrastructure, national travel and tourism policy and the “enabling environment” (from safety and hygiene to the labor market). It measured 90 indicators against 14 “fundamentals” within those areas, which means that the 140 countries were rated for things like cultural resources, air transport infrastructure and price competitiveness.

The basics were added to form the general classification.

Austria, whose capital, Vienna, was named the "most livable city in the world" this month, ranked 11th overall. However, he headed the "health and hygiene" board.

Regarding security, Finland, Iceland and Oman were considered the safest countries. El Salvador, Nigeria and Yemen were classified as the least safe.

The United States ranked first in a single factor: that of "human resources and the labor market."

Canada ranked first in air transport infrastructure and Mexico in natural resources.

In the general classification, there was more movement outside the top 10. Romania, Serbia and Albania climbed 12 places to 56, 83 and 86 respectively. Egypt rose nine places and Oman eight.

Meanwhile, Taiwan fell seven places to 37, Ecuador fell from 57 to 70, and Trinidad and Tobago had the biggest drop, plunging 14 places from 73 to 87.
