(CNN) - Australian journalist Peter Lalor is a beer fan. He has written about beers for almost 25 years, but refuses to pay more than $ 10 for a pint (about 20 ounces or about 590 milliliters).

"I like good beer and good wine, but I don't pay ridiculous prices," he told CNN in an email.

Well, until he went for a drink at a hotel bar in Manchester, England. I expected to pay $ 6.76 for a beer. But the charge was more than 10,000 times more than that.

The terrible experience began on Sunday night, after he left a friend at a Manchester train station and stopped at the Malmaison hotel for a drink. He asked for something British. To his dismay, the bartender suggested a Heineken. Then he settled for an IPA (although it ended up being a Scottish beer).

Lalor didn't have her glasses when the waitress passed the bill, she said, but "she had a feeling that the price was wrong." Then, he asked her what they were charging, and she laughed.

Lalor was not laughing.

"She had increased the price 10,000 times," he said.

Waiting for the refund

Management granted an immediate refund and assured him that the charge could not even go through a massive account. But a few days later, his wife called: more than $ 67,000 missing.

His bank said it takes about 10 days to reimburse the sum, so Lalor looks forward to it.

"I am not a rich man," he said. "I could buy 10 times my car with that amount."

Malmaison told CNN that they approached him to apologize and resolve the error.

"We always compare the prices of our bars and recognize that this was a bit expensive," the hotel chain said in a statement to CNN. “We look forward to inviting Peter for another drink soon. The next one definitely on behalf of the house! ”
