(CNN Spanish) - The president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, declared Thursday a national emergency due to the drought that affects the country.
According to official data, between 50% and 60% of the crops of basic grains such as corn and beans that were sown to harvest in the first half of August have suffered damage.
The emergency was declared after a meeting of Hernández with the members of the National Risk Management System.
The crisis due to the lack of rain is not only felt in crops, the water distribution system for human consumption is also being affected.
MIRA : What are more harmful to the countryside, floods or droughts?
This week, for example, the mayor of Tegucigalpa told the media that in the two dams that supply water to the capital of Honduras there are reservations for only 40 days. The official asked the population to pray for the rains to arrive.
According to the Government, in several departments the high temperatures, product of the prolonged summer, have affected livestock. The leaders of this area say that more than one hundred cattle have died from the heat.
In order to face this emergency, the Government made 200 million lempiras, about 8 million dollars, available to grain producers and ranchers.
