(CNN Spanish) - The Venezuelan Public Ministry opened a criminal investigation against the president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as announced today by Attorney General Tarek William Saab.
Saab explained that the criminal investigation is based on an audio obtained by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, whose origin he did not explain, in which two people - who the government says are related to Guaidó - would negotiate the delivery of Esequibo to Guyana in exchange for political support to the opposition leader.
For Guaidó, the investigation against him "tries to distract attention."
The Esequibo is a large territory subject to a border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana dating from 1899, when this country was still a British colony. The dispute is already in the International Court of Justice, which analyzes whether or not it has the power to decide.
The binational problem was revived following the granting of oil concessions in the marine waters of the disputed territory.
