(CNN) - A comic from the 'Avengers' saga, in which a kiss appears between two male superheroes, sold out at a book fair in Rio de Janeiro after the city's conservative mayor tried to block his sale, according to the France-Presse agency.

Marcelo Crivella, affiliated with the mega evangelical church Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, demanded that the Marvel comic “Vingadores: A Crusade Das Crianças” (“Avengers: The Crusade of Children”) be withdrawn from the sale at the Biennial of the Rio book.

Crivella, who called homosexuality a "terrible evil" in his 1999 book "Evangelizing Africa", opposed a kiss depicted between the superheroes Wiccan and Hulkling. By Friday, the comic had completely sold out at the book fair, organizers told AFP.

"Guys, we need to protect our children," the mayor wrote on Twitter. “As a result, we have determined that the organizers of the Biennial collect books with content that is not suitable for minors. It is not correct that they have early access to issues that are not appropriate for their age. ”

After his lawsuit provoked a violent reaction, he said in a later tweet: “The decision to collect comics at the Biennale had only one goal: to comply with the law and protect families. According to ECA (Brazilian Statute for Children and Adolescents), the works must be sealed and identified in terms of their content. In this particular case, there was no warning on the subject. ”

In a video posted on Twitter, Crivella, who was elected in 2016, said: “There is some controversy in the media regarding the mayor's decision to eliminate books that had homosexual content that reached a child and youth audience. What we did was to protect families, this should be a topic discussed within families. You cannot induce, either in schools, in book sessions, wherever you are. We will always seek to protect families. ”

Marcelo Crivella, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, said that the representation of a kiss between two men was "inappropriate for minors."

The organizers of the book fair responded Friday by presenting a preventive mandate before the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro. In a statement posted on Instagram, the organizers said that the mandate was intended to "ensure the full functioning of the event and the right of exhibitors to market literary works on the most diverse topics, as provided by Brazilian law."

The Book Biennial, which is announced as the largest literary event in the country, “maintains its agenda for the weekend, giving voice to all audiences, without distinction, as it should be a democracy. This is a plural festival where everyone is welcome and represented, ”the statement reads.

The book fair, which concludes this Sunday, will organize events on topics such as "happiness, science, motherhood, theater, trans literature, LGBTQA + and more," according to the Instagram post.
