French Minister of Solidarity and Health Agnes Beauzin announced that 1,500 people were killed due to the severe heat wave that swept the country during June and July.

Bosein told France Info radio today that authorities had detected about 1,500 more deaths in those two months, noting that about half of that number of elderly people over the age of 70, but the death toll also included young people whose heat had a negative impact on their health.

She pointed out that 18 days of summer were very hot and that nearly 20 million people suffered in one way or another.

According to the radio, this number is far less than the outcome of the exceptional heat wave in France in the summer of 2003, when accidents related to the heat caused 15,000 deaths.
