(CNN) - Rafael Nadal won the 2019 U.S. Open by defeating Russian Daniil Medvedev in an epic 5-set match with a score of 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 .

The victory gives Nadal the 19th Grand Slam title in his career. The 33-year-old Spaniard is only behind Roger Federer, with 20, in terms of the largest number of individual Grand Slam titles for men.

Nadal will have the opportunity to reach Federer at the Australian Open in Melbourne in January.
