After a renewed violent protest weekend in Hong Kong, China warns the demonstrators against further escalations. The former British Crown Colony is an inseparable part of the People's Republic, state Chinese media said. Any kind of cleavage attempts would be "crushed". The demonstrators should stop trying the patience of the central government, according to the China Daily.
The rally on Sunday proved that foreign forces were behind the protests that have often led to clashes with the police since 9 June. Thousands of demonstrators called on President Donald Trump in front of the US consulate in the Chinese Special Administrative Region to "liberate" Hong Kong.
Despite the warning, hundreds of students demonstrated solidarity with the protest movement on Monday. In several districts they formed human chains. The opponents of the government demand inter alia the release of all arrested demonstrators. Protesters fear the influence of the Chinese government on Hong Kong and oppose police violence in the protests. The case of activist Joshua Wong, one of the best-known civil rights activists, has attracted international attention.
Activist Wong free again after arrest
He was reportedly arrested at the airport on Sunday and was due to appear in court on Monday. He was accused of violating bail conditions, he wrote on Twitter. Meanwhile the activist is free again and on the way to Germany. There he is expected to attend an event in the roof garden restaurant of the Bundestag.
"It was unnecessary for them to hold me for 24 hours," Wong said. "You could have fired me yesterday afternoon."
Wong had been arrested for several hours at the end of August and released on bail. He and his associate Agnes Chow were accused of incitement and participation by others in participating in an illegal meeting in the Chinese Special Administrative Region on 21 June. Wong also has to be responsible for the organization of the demonstration.
