LONDON (Reuters) - British House of Commons Speaker John Berkhaw has announced his intention to resign within weeks on criticism from supporters of Brexit who believe he has broken parliamentary rules to undermine their position.
"I will not run again if the deputies vote later today in favor of early elections and I will resign in all cases on October 13, whatever the outcome of the vote," Berkaw told parliament.
Berkhaw served as chairman of the House of Commons for 10 years, witnessed heated debates over Brexit and made decisions on what the House should do based on centuries-old practices.
Political tensions in Britain have been exacerbated by the challenge of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's desire to leave Britain from the European Union on October 31, even if no agreement is reached, while the country is in disarray after passing a bill banning any prime minister. To leave without agreement only after the approval of Parliament first.
