The theme of the day: Launch of the IAA

The International Motor Show IAA was once considered the industry event of the year. But the glamorous times are over. The IAA is in crisis - and with it the German car industry. Driving bans, diesel scandals and electric change are just three topics that the industry has to deal with. It's in the middle of the biggest upheaval in their history - and probably not all companies will survive.

The crisis also affects tens of thousands of employees. They are already feeling the consequences of the mobility turnaround. How they handle the fear for the job, my colleague Markus Dettmer wrote down.

On the other side are the opponents of the car. They push on the big stage during the IAA. Environmental organizations and the climate protection movement "Fridays for Future" have announced demonstrations and blockades for the public weekend. They demand a rethinking of the industry.

But just the auto industry is very sluggish and slow, says Streetscooter founder Achim Kampker. In an interview he talks about alternatives to the car and explains why he puts his work at the service of sustainability.

The number of the day: 26,300

According to a Bertelsmann study, so many teachers will be missing in primary schools alone in 2025. Previously, a forecast by the Conference of Ministers of Education had estimated the shortage of teachers far less. But the experts have miscalculated - they had apparently assumed wrong numbers.
