The Maltese government has reported that there is a solution for the remaining on the German rescue ship "Alan Kurdi" migrants after days of blockage. Two EU countries agreed to accept the remaining five migrants. The migrants should not stay in Malta. Which states the people take over, remained unclear.
The ship of the Regensburg organization Sea-Eye had taken about 13 migrants on the Mediterranean about ten days ago, most of them had previously been brought as emergencies ashore. The crew reported two suicide attempts. According to the NGO, people come from Tunisia. They are now being landed by Maltese army ships.
Now the rescue ship "Ocean Viking" is blocked with 84 boat refugees on the sea. The boat - like so many other ships before - can not dock in Malta or Italy.
Representatives of EU governments seek solution
However, there may be some progress in finding a way to distribute boaters across the EU. On 23 September, Malta invited representatives of Germany, France, Italy, EU Council President Finland and the EU Commission to the Maltese city of Vittoriosa, a spokesperson for the Maltese Ministry of the Interior confirmed. The originally scheduled for September 19 meeting had initially been postponed due to scheduling problems.
The purpose of the transitional arrangements is to prevent Italy and Malta from continuing to refuse ships with rescued migrants on board their ports. Both countries had recently done so on several occasions and demanded that other EU countries agree to include all migrants on board. The people then often had to endure for several weeks on the ships.
