(CNN) - A new Barbie doll is about to appear on the shelves, with flowers on her dress and a skull painted on her face.

It is the Barbie of the Day of the Dead. The collectible doll, which will be launched this Thursday, celebrates the annual Mexican festival, in which people honor their deceased loved ones.

The $ 75 doll "honors the traditions, symbols and rituals that are often seen throughout this time," said Mattel, the toy company that owns the Barbie brand.

Barbie's long black dress is embroidered with hearts and butterflies, with colorful ruffled sleeves. His face is painted with a skull, a popular practice during the festival, when revelers wear colorful costumes and perform parades. On the head of the doll rests a crown with monarch butterflies and marigolds, or cempasúchil flowers.

Monarch butterflies generally migrate in Mexico during the winter and arrive at the same time as the festival, and have come to symbolize the souls of loved ones returning to visit. Cempasúchil flowers are often used to decorate houses during celebrations.

This year, the Day of the Dead will take place on November 1 and 2. In addition to parties and parades, families often organize offerings or altars, with photographs of deceased relatives, as well as their favorite foods and drinks. People also leave representations of human skeletons and skulls, and other offerings, along roads and cemeteries.

The party was included in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO in 2008, and has had greater visibility in popular culture and the media in the United States. The party inspired the 2017 Pixar movie "Coco," which was hailed as "the movie that Latinos have been waiting for" and won two Academy Awards.

Now, as the holiday approaches, there are signs of celebration in the United States, with sugar skulls for sale and makeup artists who already have reservations.
