(CNN Spanish) - Forest fires in Bolivia have consumed two million hectares, 900,000 of them, in protected areas, the Santa Cruz Governorate reported.

In a press conference on Monday from Santa Cruz, President Evo Morales explained that the hot spots in the Bolivian Chiquitanía are more than 1,000 and that the most affected regions are Concepción, San Ignacio de Velasco, San Matías and Charagua, when ratifying that in the last two populations the fire was recently reactivated.

According to government data, Bolivia fights the fires in the Chiquitanía with a Boeing Supertanker, 50 cisterns, 15 helicopters, light aircraft, and more than 200 vehicles for the transport of at least 7,000 brigade and volunteer firefighters.

Enrique Bruno, director of the Emergency Operations Center (COEN), informed in a press conference that they will hold an emergency meeting this Tuesday, with representatives of the government and the Government of Morales, to evaluate the steps to follow to continue fighting the fires. One of the main concerns for Bruno is that a group of international experts who evaluated the fires recommended COEN to fight fires with heavy machinery because the intensity of the fires is too strong to be fought by firefighters.
