(CNN) - Michael Jordan, who is a member of the NBA Hall of Fame and owner of the Charlotte Hornets, pledged to donate a million dollars to help with the relief efforts of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, announced Tuesday Jordan spokesman, Estee Portney, on social networks.

"I am devastated to see the destruction that Hurricane Dorian has brought to the Bahamas, where I own a property and visit frequently," Jordan said in a statement posted on Twitter. "My heart is with all those who suffer and with those who have lost their loved ones."

"As recovery and relief efforts continue, I will closely monitor the situation and work to identify nonprofit agencies where the funds have the greatest impact," he continued.

"The people of the Bahamas are strong and resilient and I hope my donation is helpful while they work to recover from this catastrophic storm," the former basketball player added.
