Protests in Special Administrative Region: Hong Kong's head of government warns the US against interference

2019-09-10T07:58:33.404Z

Protesters in Hong Kong have asked US President Trump for help. However, the head of the Special Administrative Region warns Washington - "common advantages" are then in danger.

Hong Kong's Prime Minister Carrie Lam has urged the US to stop "interfering" in protests in the Special Administrative Region. That was "extremely inappropriate for any country," she said.

For the past three months, millions of Hong Kong residents have been demonstrating that their civil liberties, which are larger than Mainland China, have been curtailed. There were repeated violent clashes between protesters and police and more than 1100 arrests. On Sunday, many demonstrators in Hong Kong moved to the American Consulate. They demanded that the US Congress follow a recent proposal to explicitly support the protest movement in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Prime Minister Carrie Lam: "Do not jeopardize common advantages"

Activist Wong calls for worldwide help in Berlin

Lam warned that any change in economic relations with Washington would jeopardize "common benefits". The proposed law could undermine Hong Kong's trading privileges with the US by providing regular controls on whether authorities respect Hong Kong's special status.

Hong Kong's head of state also condemned the recent escalation of a peaceful rally on Sunday. "The increasing and ongoing violence can not solve the problems that we have in Hong Kong," Lam said.

The well-known Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong demanded greater support for the democracy movement in China's Special Administrative Region shortly after his arrival in Berlin. "I hope that people around the world are supporting people in Hong Kong who are fighting for freedom and free elections," said the 22-year-old of the "Bild" newspaper.

It was time for more people in Germany to concentrate on Hong Kong. "We have the impression that Hong Kong is like East Berlin during the Cold War, and precisely because the Germans fought for freedom, especially in Berlin, I ask the Germans for help in our fight."

Since its return in 1997, the former British Crown Colony has been governed autonomously by China in its own territory with its own Basic Law, based on the principle of "one country, two systems". The Hong Kong people are under China's sovereignty, but - unlike the people of the Communist People's Republic - enjoy more rights such as freedom of expression and assembly. Many are calling for free elections, as they had once been promised.
