US President Donald Trump announced today that he has fired his national security adviser John Bolton because he "strongly disagrees with his positions."

"I told Bolton last night that we no longer need his services in the White House," Trump wrote in a tweet on Twitter.

For his part, Bolton denied that he had been fired, stressing that he had submitted his resignation himself.

Trump's tweet came one hour after the White House announced that Bolton would hold a news conference alongside Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Bolton, who took office in April 2018 as successor to HR McMaster, at odds with Secretary of State Pompeo, was one of Trump's key loyalists.

Bolton's resignation adds to the Trump administration's many resignations, becoming the top US administration in the number of resignations or dismissals of its officials in the last four decades after the administration of former President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.

These resignations reflect the extent of disagreements in the Trump administration over how to deal with domestic issues, foreign policy and how to deal with international crises.
