Consumer protection cadres work to tighten control over the markets in terms of controlling prices and limiting their rise and ensure the validity of materials for consumption within the required specifications and suppress the phenomenon of trafficking in subsidized materials such as fuel, gas and ration flour.

Ali Al-Khatib, Director of Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Internal Trade, said in a statement to the SANA Economic Bulletin that the supervisory work of consumer protection patrols aims primarily to reduce the commission of serious violations, especially those subsidized by the state in addition to materials of unknown origin and contrary to specifications through conducting quality control patrols to follow up the movement of materials. Commodities related to the daily life of citizens in the markets of all governorates and follow-up complaints submitted at the highest speed.

Al-Khatib said that 2565 restraint regulations were organized during August last year in all governorates except Idlib and Raqqa governorates related to fraud, dealing with expired materials, trafficking in subsidized materials by the state, violating the Syrian standards in the statement card and the absence of a specification card in addition to anonymous materials. 750 seizures of samples drawn to show their conformity to the specification showed that 171 samples were violated, 295 samples were identical and 284 samples were being analyzed.

Al-Khatib pointed out to achieve good results in suppressing the phenomenon of fraud and monopoly and the pursuit of anonymous goods, targeting the sources and warehouses of storage and basic production places in order to reach safe markets and protect the national product, the amount of goods and materials of unknown origin decreased significantly from the markets where only 18 seizures of unknown materials were organized during Last August, follow-up continues.

Al-Khatib said, “The ministry is taking decisive and important measures in controlling the smuggling of rationing and trafficking of rations and following up the hydrocarbon sector and controlling the manipulators and traffickers.

Al-Khatib revealed that 1931 patrols were conducted by the Consumer Protection Agency, which organized 3315 judicial controls on the Trade Law No. 14, seized samples during the month of August, and closed 187 commercial activities, while 57 violators were referred to the judiciary. Amounted to 33 million.

Al-Khatib pointed out that the organized irregularities were distributed on the failure to announce the prices by 1106 seizures and not trading bills of 459 seizures and violations of services allowance 203 and selling at a price plus 156 seizures, while the rest of the seizures were distributed to 306 seizures of subsidized materials, 89 seizures in the meat trade, 27 seizures of expired materials and 18 Exactly for the trafficking of unknown materials.

It is noteworthy that the draft amendment to Law 14 on consumer protection and market supervision is under study and issuance.Amendments include tightening ration penalties and judicial procedures and increasing financial fines for the perpetrators of grave breaches related to fraud and violation of specifications and how to deal with materials of unknown origin and others.
