Foreign Minister Heiko Maas's meeting with Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong in Berlin now also has diplomatic consequences: the German ambassador to Beijing has been formally summoned.

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong's conversation with Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in Berlin is described by the Chinese ambassador in Berlin as an "incident" that will have negative consequences for bilateral relations. China's government has repeatedly urged not to allow Wong entry, Wu Ken said.

Because of the meeting of Maas with Wong, the German ambassador to Beijing was formally summoned according to Chinese data. "We have expressed our deep dissatisfaction," Wu Ken reported on the diplomatic process. On Tuesday, the Foreign Office had stated on request only that the German ambassador had been for a conversation in the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Wong had arrived on Monday evening in Berlin and had then spoken at a party, among other things with Maas. The prominent activist of the pro-government protest movement in Hong Kong also appeared in the Federal Press Conference on Wednesday and demanded that the Federal Government clearly condemn police brutality and abuse of power. In addition, Germany should suspend the export of equipment to the riot police of Hong Kong, said the 22-year-old.

Great demo for months

China had already complained about Maas on Tuesday. His meeting in Berlin with Wong had been an "act of disrespect". The SPD politician had met the activist at an event in the Bundestag building and had been photographed together with him.

For the past three months, millions of Hong Kong residents have been demonstrating that their civil liberties, which are larger than Mainland China, have been curtailed. There were repeated violent clashes between protesters and police and more than 1100 arrests.

Wong was first arrested at Hong Kong airport on Sunday morning before his scheduled departure. He was accused of violating his bail conditions. After 24 hours, he was released and flew to Germany immediately.
