The 23rd session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) kicked off today in St. Petersburg with the participation of 1,200 delegates from 150 countries, including Syria.

In his opening remarks, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was counting on supporting Russia's request to mark World Tourism Day in 2022 as well as the opening of the World Tourism Center under the auspices of the World Tourism Organization, pledging active government support for the development of Russia's tourism industry.

“Over the past five years, more than 125 million foreign tourists have visited Russia as a result of the country's ongoing work to develop the tourism industry,” Putin said. “We will more effectively provide government support to the industry, enhance the competitiveness of our tourism market and offer the most advanced services that are compatible with the digital age. The Syrian Arab Republic delegation headed by Minister of Tourism Mohammad Rami Radwan Martini and Syrian Ambassador to Moscow Dr. Riyad Haddad participated in the 23rd session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization and the election of the representative of the Russian Tourism Organization Zarina Doguzova as president of the World Tourism Organization.

The Syrian delegation presented a working paper to the conference confirming Syria's possession of all the elements of cultural and therapeutic tourism and religious tourism and leisure tourism and its readiness to attract all types of this tourism and to provide executive projects in short and medium-term programs, given the possibilities of the tourism sector in providing infrastructure and logistics for this sector.

The paper presented stressed the security and stability enjoyed by Syria after its achievements in the face of terrorist organizations.

The paper pointed out the availability of all the elements of tourism in Syria, such as transportation routes, airports, flights and hotel possibilities at the international level, pointing out that there are many suggestions on programs for cooperation and investment in tourism projects in Syria.

The General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization is the main tourism event in the world and is held every two years and competes for the next session in 2021 Morocco, the Philippines and Kenya.
