The Middle East threatens new trouble . Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to annex parts of the West Bank in the event of his victory in the parliamentary elections on 17 September. In doing so, he risks a serious conflict with the Palestinians and their Arab neighbors, who regard the area as part of a future Palestinian state. The Foreign Ministers of the Arab League immediately criticized Netanyahu's plans as damaging to the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat called Netanyahu's planned action a war crime.

One thing is for sure: First of all , the prime minister's idea is primarily a campaign maneuver . With the announcement, Netanyahu apparently wants to win more votes from right-wing voters. Recent polls are putting pressure on the prime minister: his challenger, former chief of staff Benny Gantz, is head-to-head with him in polls.

Merkel's chance for a mini-comeback

Tobias SCHWARZ / AFP

It is unfortunately sometimes forgotten, but the heart of democracy in this country does not beat in "Anne Will" on Sunday evening or on Twitter on Tuesday morning, but in the German Bundestag . That's where the laws are made and passed that affect our lives, both positively and negatively. Today Parliament meets in the context of the budget discussions on the traditional general debate on the policy of the Federal Government.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) will present her government policy, while the leaders of the Bundestag factions speak at the same time. It is to be expected that climate protection will be the focus of attention this year, the grand coalition has prepared a major climate plan, and the opposition has been calling for more efforts by the Union and the SPD for months.

After the long summer break, it will be especially interesting to see how dedicated (or even less committed) the head of government is to the cause. In the past few months, it sometimes seemed as if Merkel had almost disappeared into a sort of early retirement. Now the Chancellor could explain why she really wants to continue governing. Today would be the opportunity for a mini-comeback.

Who follows Bolton?

Brendan SMIALOWSKI / AFP

US President Donald Trump must find a new security adviser. John Bolton is out . The fact that Bolton's chair could wobble had been a popular whispering theme in the diplomatic scene in Western capitals for weeks. Even German diplomats had noticed at the G7 summit in Biarritz at the end of August that Bolton probably no longer had access to the important talks of the heads of state and government. He lacked the "Red Badge", the access card to the rooms in which the bosses conferred. The White House is said not to have applied for the card for him before the summit, they say.

Who should now be Bolton's successor is unclear. The names of some US diplomats from the second and third series, including that of the US ambassador to Berlin, Richard Grenell , are under discussion. Also named is Brian Hook , the US government's Iran representative, and Keith Kellogg , security advisor to Trump vice-president Mike Pence. Some jokers have already suggested a comeback by Henry Kissinger. The man is 96.

Loser of the day ...

... is the Russian hip hop Timati . He is a fan of Russian President Vladimir Putin and apparently also shares his political views. In a music video, Timati now set the mood against the protesters who have been campaigning for more democracy in Russia for weeks. "I do not go to demos, and I do not spread shit," sings the hip-hopper, for example. At the same time he praises Moscow as a "city where there are no gay parades". For Putin and his followers, that's probably going to be okay. Many other Russians had less pleasure in doing so. In just a few days, Timati's YouTube video caught fabulous 1.48 million dislikes. This is a new negative record.
