(CNN) - Heavy rains could go to the islands in northern Bahamas in a matter of days, where teams are still searching for hundreds of people missing from Hurricane Dorian.

"It's not the best news for an area that has already been most affected by Hurricane Dorian, with heavy rains and very strong winds," CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam said Thursday, referring to the category 5 monster that does less than Two weeks struck the nation archipelago.

The storm system can also move through the Gulf of Mexico, he said, possibly impacting coastal areas of Florida to Texas. It occurs when the hurricane season in the Atlantic reaches its statistical peak in the weeks surrounding September 10, a period in which climatic conditions favor the formation of storms rapidly.

There is a 70% chance that a tropical depression or a tropical storm can form by Saturday from the low pressure area now near the Turks and Caicos Islands, the National Hurricane Center predicted Thursday morning. It would be called Humberto if it reaches the force of tropical storm.

Nearly 10.2 centimeters of rain could fall in the next five days in Marsh Harbor, a city in the Abacos Islands of the Bahamas where Dorian destroyed about 1,100 buildings, some forecast models show. In Nassau, a nation's hurricane recovery center, 3.8 centimeters of rain could fall early next week, the models show.

Those rainfall totals may be lower, with 1 to 5.1 centimeters falling in northern Bahamas, other forecast models show. Isolated sections of the islands could see more rain, according to those predictions, which have the greatest impact of the system's rain in Florida.

"We are still several days away from the main impacts," said Van Dam.

Meanwhile, a tropical wave still near the west coast of Africa could turn into a tropical depression early next week, the hurricane center said. Van Dam said it has been many days since they posed a threat to the United States or the Bahamas.

CNN meteorologist Judson Jones contributed to this report.
