The newspaper quoted three former officials in the administration of US President Donald Trump as saying that these devices were probably intended to spy on Trump and his top aides and close to him, noting that it was not clear "whether Israel has succeeded in obtaining any information."
The newspaper said that the mini spy devices known as "Sting Rise" emulate the towers of ordinary mobile phones in such a way as to deceive these phones to provide them with the geographical locations of their users and personal data.
Trump, who is known for his non-compliance with White House security protocols, often uses a mobile phone that is not secure enough to communicate with his friends and close associates, raising concerns.
A senior Trump administration and FBI official declined to comment and respond to the newspaper's report, while the Department of Homeland Security and Intelligence did not respond to requests for comment.
