(Expansion) - The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, spoke by telephone with his counterpart from the United States, Donald Trump, and both spoke positively about the contact.

López Obrador announced the call through a Twitter account: “The desire to maintain a relationship of friendship and cooperation between our peoples and governments was reaffirmed,” he wrote in a message in which he appears accompanied by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón.

The contact between both president was a few hours after the meeting held by Ebrard with the US Secretary of State, Mike Pence, in which the immigration agreement between Mexico and the United States was analyzed.

The president of the United States considered that the communication was "excellent" and said that the "southern border is becoming very strong despite the obstruction by the Democrats of not accepting to do anything about legal loopholes or asylum."

Trump confirmed the call on his Twitter account.

I had an excellent telephone conversation with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico, talking about Southern Border Security, and various other things of mutual interest for the people of our respective countries….

In his morning conference, the Mexican president described the meeting as "successful" on Wednesday and said that at the meeting, held on Tuesday in Washington, "there was agreement" on the immigration issue to maintain the same development cooperation policy, " of friendship ”and“ to put aside the confrontation ”.

He even thanked his American counterpart, Donald Trump, for having an attitude of "respect" with Mexico.

"There was an acknowledgment that our commitments were fulfilled and the risk was removed, the threat of imposing tariffs unilaterally," said López Obrador.

The agreement established a 90-day review period, which ended this month, for both parties to assess the effectiveness of Mexico's actions to contain the flow of migrants to the United States.

Although he commented that he would give more details this Thursday, López Obrador said that this last meeting was "diametrically different" than the one that the Mexican delegation had three months ago with the US vice president.

"On that occasion they were not rude, but they were in a more rigid posture," he said.
